Lower School
The Early Years Department occupies spacious and stimulating teaching areas which are linked to large and wellresourced indoor and outdoor play areas.
Throughout the Middle School, the ethos is to create a stimulating educational environment, lively and colorful, in which children feel secure and happy, are motivated to do their best work and enthusiastic about the range of subjects taught in a challenging manner.
We
believe that all children require a broad and differentiated curriculum
to develop their full potential both academically and socially.
In the Middle School Department (Year 3 to Year 6) the teaching
programme is based upon the National Curriculum of England
and the Middle School Department has reviewed and continues to
update the curriculum in line with the New Primary Strategy (June
2006) and has introduced such innovations considered appropriate
for the development of Literacy and Numeracy skills.
Emphasis is
placed on the Core subjects, Literacy, especially Speaking and
Listening, Reading with support for children who have English as a
Second Language, Numeracy and Science. ICT is taught by specialist
teachers, through all subjects.
In Literacy and Numeracy children are set by ability in Year groups 5
and 6 to provide a curriculum which caters for their individual needs
and gives access to the curriculum according to each child’s level of
ability, which is constantly monitored.
We encourage home links and liaise with parents on a regular basis.
In the Middle School Department we wish parents to take an active
role in their child’s education and work ‘as partners’ in the education
of their child. Information concerning the curriculum, i.e. topics and
themes covered each term in Science and Humanities, is issued to
parents at the beginning of each term.
Children are tested in all subjects in December (Mid-Year tests) and
May (End-of-Year tests). Parents receive reports each term and have
an opportunity to meet all teachers on Open Day, which is held once
per term. Children are assessed continually throughout the year by
their class teacher and support teachers as appropriate. This may
take the form of formative, diagnostic or summative assessment
procedures in order to assess and monitor children’s progress and to
set learning targets.
Children are taught History, Geography, K.S.S. and Art. Specialist
teachers teach Arabic for Arabs and non-Arabs, Islamic Studies for
Muslims, I.C.T., P.E., French for Years groups 4,5 and 6 and Music.
Students are regularly taken on educational visits to enhance their
learning and lessons. The school day consists of 8 lessons, each 40
minutes long, with two 15-minute breaks, one at 9.30 a.m., and
the other at 11.45 a.m.
Written homework covering all subjects is given each day for all
children in Years groups 3 to 6.
Specialist help is available for children who have educational
difficulties and for children who need English as an Additional
Language support.
The school also encourages children
to participate in a wide range of
extra-curricular activities covering
sport, games, athletics, swimming
and academic subjects. During the
school year children participate
in International Day, Book Week,
School Winter Fayre, concerts, school
productions and weekly assemblies.
